Golf Outing

The Juneteenth Golf Outing was created to expand access and opportunity for youth from Columbus City Schools by introducing them—early in life—to the game of golf, a lifelong sport that builds character, discipline, and leadership. Through the continued growth of golf, the program provides exposure to a game many participants would not otherwise experience until much later, offering instruction, mentorship, and resources that foster confidence and belonging. Beyond athletic development, golf serves as a platform for teaching perseverance, integrity, and the importance of the journey over immediate results. Participants learn that meaningful impact—whether large or small—often occurs when no one is watching, and that their actions can influence peers, adults, and communities in lasting ways. These lessons help shape young people into thoughtful individuals who understand responsibility, resilience, and how to positively impact society throughout their lives.

Through the Grow with Golf initiative, participants advanced beyond the fundamentals of the sport and into a comprehensive life-skills workshop that positioned golf as a tool for real-world application. Youth engaged in sessions focused on financial literacy, budgeting, professional appearance, career awareness, and personal accountability, delivered through interactive instruction and real-world examples. In collaboration with mentoring organizations and led in part by a PGA professional and golf business owner, the workshop demonstrated how principles learned through golf—planning, preparation, adaptability, and decision-making—translate directly to success in education, careers, and community leadership.
